NEET Exam Mandate

What is the mandatory exam for MBBS admissions in India?

Updated for the 2026-2027 Academic Session • Medical Admissions Guide

Admission to all MBBS, BDS, and primary AYUSH programs across India is strictly and exclusively based on the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG). Since 2020, even premier medical institutes like AIIMS and JIPMER have scrapped their internal exams, operating entirely on NEET scores.

Understanding the NEET Framework

1. Absolute Mandatory Status

It is legally impossible to pursue an MBBS degree in India—whether in a government college, a private university, or a deemed medical institution—without a valid, qualifying NEET score. Even Management Quota seats and NRI slots in private medical colleges require the candidate to hit the minimum qualifying NEET percentile.

2. The Medical Counseling Committee (MCC)

Once NEET results are published, the MCC conducts centralized counseling for the 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats in government medical colleges nationwide. Furthermore, 100% of seats in Deemed Universities, Central Universities (like DU, AMU, BHU), and ESIC colleges are handled under this MCC structure.

3. State Quota Counseling (85%)

The remaining 85% of seats in government medical colleges, alongside state private colleges, fall under state jurisdiction. State medical authorities (like DME or CET cells) conduct localized counseling based on the state merit list drawn from NEET scores. You must possess strict state domicile certificates to participate heavily in these rounds.

4. Studying Medicine Abroad (FMGE/NExT)

If you intend to study MBBS in a foreign country (like Russia, Georgia, or the Philippines) and return to India to practice, securing a qualifying NEET-UG scorecard before you leave is mandatory according to the National Medical Commission (NMC). Without it, you cannot appear for the licensing exams (FMGE/NExT) upon your return.
