JoSAA vs CSAB

What is the difference between JOSAA and CSAB counseling?

Updated for the 2026-2027 Academic Session • Engineering Admissions

While both JoSAA and CSAB are official authorities responsible for allocating engineering seats across India's premier government institutions, they operate in distinct phases and target different sets of vacant seats.

Understanding JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority)

JoSAA is the primary and first phase of counseling. It is established by the Ministry of Education to manage and regulate joint seat allocation across 118 institutes, which include IITs, NITs, IIESTs, IIITs, and Other-GFTIs.

  • Eligibility: Students who have qualified JEE Main and/or JEE Advanced.
  • Rounds: Typically conducts 6 regular rounds of seat allocation.
  • Scope: Allocates seats for ALL participating institutes, including the prestigious IITs.

Understanding CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board)

CSAB activates only after all 6 rounds of JoSAA counseling are officially closed. Its primary purpose is to fill the remaining vacant seats (leftover or surrendered seats) from the JoSAA rounds.

  • Eligibility: Candidates who qualified JEE Main. (CSAB does not consider JEE Advanced ranks).
  • Rounds: Conducts 2 Special Rounds specifically for vacant seats.
  • Scope: Allocates seats ONLY for NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and GFTIs. IITs do not participate in CSAB counseling.

Key Strategic Differences

CSAB requires a fresh registration and a separate participation fee. It is highly volatile, meaning candidates with lower JEE Main percentiles can sometimes secure seats in top NITs/IIITs if a vacancy unexpectedly opens up. However, relying purely on CSAB is a high-risk strategy.
