Spot Admission Rounds

What does a structural centralized spot admission round imply?

Updated for the 2026-2027 Academic Session • Last Chance Admissions

Spot admission rounds (or Mop-Up rounds) are the absolute final phase of any centralized counseling process. They are executed to quickly fill up any seats that have been surrendered or left vacant after the regular counseling rounds have concluded.

The Spot Round Mechanism

1. Eligibility and Registration

Usually, candidates who were not allotted any seat in the earlier rounds, or those who rejected their previously allotted seats, are eligible to participate. A fresh registration and non-refundable participation fee are often mandatory to enter this phase.

2. Real-Time Allocation Risk

Spot rounds can be conducted online or physically at nodal centers. Seats are displayed in real-time, and allocations are made strictly on descending merit order. The volatility is high; a student with a low rank might unexpectedly secure a premium branch if a vacancy suddenly appears.

3. Immediate Token Commitment

Unlike regular rounds where you get days to decide, a spot round allotment requires immediate action. Candidates must pay a significant token commitment amount (sometimes the full first-semester fee) on the spot to secure the seat, failing which it instantly rolls over to the next candidate in line.
