How can international or NRI students apply for Indian admissions?

Updated for the 2026-2027 Academic Session • NRI Quota Guide

India offers dedicated pathways for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), and Foreign Nationals to study in top government and private universities without navigating the domestic competitive bottleneck.

1. The DASA Scheme (Government Institutes)

The Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme is a central initiative allowing foreign nationals and NRIs to secure seats in premier institutions like NITs, IIITs, SPAs, and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs).

  • Eligibility: Candidates must have completed their 11th and 12th standard (or equivalent) outside India.
  • Selection Criteria: Admissions under DASA are now processed strictly based on JEE Main scores (replacing the older SAT score requirement).
  • CIWG Quota: Under DASA, there is a special reserved sub-category for Children of Indian Workers in the Gulf (CIWG), which offers significantly lower tuition fees compared to regular NRI categories.

2. Private Universities (15% Supernumerary Quota)

Premium private universities (like Manipal, SRM, VIT, Symbiosis) hold an official 15% supernumerary quota exclusively for international and NRI students.

  • These seats are typically completely exempted from domestic entrance exams.
  • Admission is granted directly based on equivalent high school aggregates (O-Level, A-Level, IB Diploma, or US High School Diploma).
  • The tuition fees for these seats are structured in USD and are generally 2x to 3x higher than regular domestic fees.

3. Medical Admissions (NRI Quota)

For MBBS and BDS programs, NRI candidates MUST appear for and qualify the NEET-UG examination. There are no exemptions. Once qualified, they can apply for the 15% NRI quota seats available in Deemed Universities and private medical colleges across India through MCC counseling.
